TOUR 16: Cappadocia - the Heart of Anatolian Civilization

Cappadocia was an object of desire to men, even before it was mentioned in the Holy Bible. Once the homeland of the powerful Hittite empire, later a refuge for early Christians; it is a land of magic, a region of exceptional natural wonders (in particular characterized by fairy chimneys) and a unique historical and cultural heritage.

Prepare yourself to travel back in time, and prepare your mind to wander between the images of ancient people and the breathtaking beauty of the landscape.

Your vehicle will be waiting for you for an early morning transfer to the airport. Following the flight to Kayseri city, you will travel to Cappadocia region by driving within the escort of the English speaking guide.

After check in at your hotel, the first step will be Derinkuyu Underground City which is the biggest of the region with its 12 stations under the ground.

On the way to Ihlara Valley, the Crater Lake, Nar Golu, will greet you with its magnificent scenery. Upon arrival at Ihlara Valley, 14 Km long and in some places 140 m deep with 4000 carved caves, start exploring the deep canyon by walking through the valley ( 4 km. ) reach Belisirma village for lunch in a local restaurant.

After lunch we will drive to the end of Ihlara Valley to admire the magnificent view and visit Selime Rock-Cut Monastery. Then leave Ihlara Valley behind and drive to your hotel via Selime village. An elegant dinner and a magical night's rest at your hotel in Cappadocia will help you to absorb the day's marvels.

Breakfast will be served at the hotel, before leaving for the Goreme Valley. Turks have a legend that explains the etymology of the name as: "Gör, Emi (see it for sure)". This is not without reason, for this is the most important site of the region. The valley is home to rock churches and monasteries, which dates back to 2nd century AD and are richly decorated with colorful frescoes by exiled Christians in the Roman era.

The wonders will then continue with the amazing panoramic view that you will enjoy at the natural citadel of Uchisar. You will witness the poetry, written through the ages on the soft volcanic rock by the none other than the elements of nature. The wind and the rain have worked together to create a surreal, almost lunar landscape; a scene of pillars and cones and, of course, the unique fairy chimneys.

After having lunch at an authentic restaurant, you will take a short walk throughout Zelve - Pasabag where you will find the most interesting fairy chimneys and see the first example of a monk's chapel.

Visit to Avanos for traditional handicraft and pottery manufacturing by the Hittite technique. Then head to Devrent Valley (Fairy Valley) for a closer look at the fairy chimneys.

Taste delicious Cappadocian wines during a wine factory visit than stop for a look at characteristic fairy chimneys in Urgup. Afterwards transfer to the Kayseri Airport to fly back to Istanbul and transfer to your hotel.

(Or transfer to Nevsehir airport depending on the flight day and flight time).
